All’s well that ends well?

Yesterday was awful. We are moving, so Saturday we took T-La to the vet to get some sedative, and the vet prescribed Acepromazine. I have yet to google this horror, and wonder what I’m going to find. I did find out today, though, that it is ‘the only oral sedative for animals’ according to the vet. Is this true? Anyway, T did NOT have a good reaction to it.

We tried it yesterday to know what to expect, we gave her half a pill, and if you’ve ever attempted to give a cat a pill, you know that she did not consume the entire half pill. This would have been 5 grams, as the only dosage the office had were 10 mg tabs. She ended up with about 1/2 that pill, which was a tiny 2.5 grams of this medication. Certainly no more, perhaps even less. I gave up at this point and stated, “Let’s just see how she reacts with this. Well…...

We left her alone on the office bed, and seconds later she scrambled to our bedroom. We went in to check on her, and she had vaulted on our bed, and promptly passed out. She had lost control of all bodily functions, as things were coming out of both ends, ahem, and breathing rapidly and shallowly. Absolutely horrific! I ran for the phone book and phone to find the emergency number, I got both in my shaky hands as my DH was taking care of our quiet, non reactive kitty. I called the emergency number and minutes (FOREVER) later they called back. I was in complete panic, and Ben was calmly taking care of the situation. He is our rock to be sure.

As I was talking to the lady in the emergency clinic (that was in Paramus) T-La started improving, her breathing evened out, and she started reacting to touching. We decided not to take her in, and she stayed pretty much out all day. I was in a state of high stress and panic all day. Not good. I actually had to do push ups and jog around in place to relax a smidgen.

It finally wore completely off 4 1/2 hours later, and she’s fine now.

Let’s just say that if you’re on the flight to Las Vegas with us, you may have to put up with a yowling cat for the 5 hour flight, ‘cause we ain’t giving this to her again.
